3D Design and Ceramics I is a course designed for the student who is interested in a variety of three-dimensional media to produce both functional and sculptural 3D art. This course includes areas of exploration in various methods of ceramic construction, properties of glazes, an overview of the history of ceramic art and the contemporary uses of clay, as well as an overview of the basic scientific principles of ceramic art. Students will explore a variety of 3D design and sculptural concepts such as mass, volume, form, plane, texture and function. These concepts will be reinforced through a range of styles, creative approaches, techniques, and media.
3D Design and Ceramics II is an opportunity for students to continue a more in-depth study of the materials and processes introduced in 3D Design and Ceramics I, which will allow students to further develop their 3D design and ceramic skills such as wheel throwing and alternative finishing techniques. Students will move towards an individual focus and a breadth of work using a variety of materials, concepts and techniques.
Both 3D Design and Ceramics I &II are elective course designed to meet the needs of all students through a flexible, and differentiated, curriculum. This course meets the NJ state requirements for the fine arts.
In both 3D Design and Ceramics I &II evaluation of student work is oral and written. Students are required to complete several portfolio assessments, weekly critiques, homework and a cumulative assessment, which is part of and included in the calculation of the final semester grade.
