Foundations of Art provides an understanding of an array of skills and techniques. Students are introduced to drawing skills, color theory, and the principles of two- and three-dimensional design. Areas of investigation include perspective, portraiture, figure drawing, and still life. A variety of techniques will be explored. Approaches to design, the use of observational drawing techniques and composition will be emphasized. As skills develop, students will continue in their exploration  of various media and techniques including drawing, printmaking, painting, mixed media, ceramics and sculpture. Throughout the course, production activities using a wide variety of media will focus on teh development of drawing skills, craftsmanship, and self-expression.

Foundations of Art is a first-year elective designed to meet the needs of all learners through a flexible, and differentiated, curriculum. This course meets the NJ state requirement for fine arts.

Evaluation of student work is both oral and written. Students are required to complete several portfolio assessments, weekly critiques, homework and a final exam. Expectations for all assignments and projects are expressed through rubrics.
