2D Art: Drawing and Painting I offers exploration and focused experiences related to drawing and painting. Students will use a wide variety of media including pencil, charcoal, chalk and oil pastel, acrylic paint and watercolor. The emphasis of this course is to build skill competency while promoting individual growth and creativity. The students will work with a variety of visual references including the still life, photo resources, and life drawing as they build a strong background of skills and techniques, working toward expanding their personal creative abilities and imagination.
2D Art: Drawing and Painting II is a continuation of 2D Art: Drawing and Painting I on a more advanced level. The basic skills of handling drawing and painting media have been developed and are used to solve more sophisticated visual problems. Individual instruction becomes increasingly important as advanced students explore self-expression and creative problem solving techniques.
Both 2D Art: Drawing and Painting I&II are elective coursed designed to meet the needs of all learners through a flexible, and differentiated, curriculum. This course meets the NJ state requirement for fine arts and is offered to all high school students who have taken Foundations of Art.
Evaluation of student work in both courses is oral and written. Students are required to complete several portfolio assessments, weekly critiques, homework and a cumulative assessment, which is part of and included in the calculation of the final semester grade. Expectations for all assignments and projects are expressed through rubrics.
