DEPARTMENT MISSION
The Mathematics Department at Mountain Lakes High School strives to create an environment in which all students adopt a growth mindset, maximize their potential, and benefit from an educational experience that enables them to think critically and become better problem-solvers. Teachers provide students with concrete and conceptual understandings of course content through the use of manipulatives, technology, and current best practices in mathematics education.
LEVELS OF STUDY
The Mathematics department offers a variety of courses that fall into four levels:
College Preparatory Enriched
College Preparatory Advanced
College Preparatory Honors
Advanced Placement
Each level is designed to maximize a student's potential and provide a strong foundation for future goals in the learning of mathematics and related academia. All courses provide an arena in which students think critically, reason logically, and develop an understanding of the applications of the mathematics in other disciplines and the world around them.
Enriched level courses are designed to meet the learning goals outline by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS). Advanced and Honors level courses contain a more rigorous level of study, faster pace, higher level of abstract reasoning and greater applications of knowledge than our Enriched level courses. Advanced placement courses are designed by the College Board, taught with the highest level of rigor, follow the most aggressive pace, and often result in earning college credit upon passing the corresponding College Board Advanced Placement Exam.
Mathematics teachers make professional recommendations for the level best suited to meet the needs and ability of their students in the following school year. Students who would like to take a course more rigorous than the one recommended may submit a Course Placement Application (CPA).
