Incoming K-3 Summer Reading

2023 Wildwood K-3 Summer Reading

At the Wildwood Elementary School Library we call picture books Everybody books.  That’s because picture books truly are for people of all ages.  Since picture books are meant to be shared between an adult and a child, the language is richer, the sentence structure varied and complex,  the stories have a message, and the pictures are works of art for all to enjoy. The pictures not only engage children but also help tell the story.  Often, children can make predictions or even tell themselves the entire story without reading a single word. This gives them confidence and allows them to enjoy a book long before they are reading fluently.

It is great to set a reading goal and stick with it.  Fifteen minutes a day is a good start for the younger students.  However, it is always best to decide what works best for you and your family.  Reading should not be seen as a chore.  If parents get involved children will look forward to this quiet time together.  Do not be deterred if your child reads the same book over and over or asks you to read them the same book over and over. Children learn through repetition and they are comforted by familiarity.

Keep track of your child’s reading time and/or books on the reading log over the summer.  Return the reading log to school in the fall.  Students that participate will be recognized at a reading celebration in the fall!

All titles on the following lists are suggestions and students are welcome to read their own selections as well. Some students may want to consult the 4th and 5th grade reading list as well.

In addition to the suggested reading list, the following links will provide lists of award winning reading material that have been compiled by various professional groups.
