The first grade science curriculum is divided into five major units of study; Personal Health, Animals, Our Earth, Look at the Sky, and Simple Machines. The purpose of the First Grade Science Curriculum is to introduce and to develop a foundation for each of the aforementioned areas of study.
PERSONAL HEALTH

ANIMALS
At the conclusion of this unit of study, students will be able to:
- compare and contrast a variety of animals.
- discuss the life cycles of the tadpole, chick, and butterfly.
- classify animals as mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, and amphibians.
- identify the basic needs of animals.
OUR EARTH
At the conclusion of this unit of study, the students will be able to:
- recognize a globe as a model of the earth.
- describe some land forms on earth.
- identify some bodies of water on earth.
- name some important uses of water.
- name some important uses of air.
LOOK AT THE SKY
At the conclusion of this unit of study, the students will be able to:
- compare the day and the night sky.
- explain how the moon reflects light from the sun.
- identify reasons why the sun is important.
- describe the surface of the moon.
- identify stars as distant objects that give off light.
- name the nine planets.
- name the nine planets in order from the sun.
SIMPLE MACHINES
At the conclusion of this unit of study, students will be able to:
- identify and name the six simple machines; the lever, the wheel and axle, the screw, the inclined plane, the wedge, and the pulley.
- identify simple machines used in everyday life.
- recognize how people use simple machines.
- understand how simple machines make work easier.
