Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA)

Club / Activity: Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA)

Advisor: Kandy Delgado ([email protected])

The mission of the GSA is to create a safe space for individuals in the LGBTQ+ community and their allies at MLHS as well as the fostering of acceptance for all individuals regardless of sexual orientation, gender, etc. The club’s activities will all aim to cultivate alliances across all grade levels and amongst students with diverse backgrounds. There are about 35-40 students that regularly participate in this club. The GSA does not have a set meeting schedule; however, we intend to meet at
least twice each month, after school at 2:45 PM in Mrs. Delgado’s Nutrition Lab.
The Club highlights and/or accomplishments from last year were:

1. During the 2017-18 academic year, the GSA took field trip to Johnson and Johnson; employees from the LGBT+ community talked about their experiences working for the company, shared their own stories and offered a message of hope and acceptance in the modern-day workforce, highlighting what companies and corporations are doing to ensure equal rights and safe spaces for all individuals for whom they provide employment.

2. We have also offered, and continue to organize several movie nights that take place on Friday evenings throughout the year and, thus far, have had incredible student turnouts. Students do not need to be members of the GSA to attend. Most recently, we watched Love Simon, with a 50+ student turnout.

Mrs. Delgado states that the goals for this year are to “Continue to establish alliances amongst all individuals in the MLHS and larger Mountain Lakes community; to promote acceptance and safe spaces for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. We will seek opportunities for field trips, guest speakers, and activities that help us in achieving our missions.”
